Statewide Crime Statistics - 2006
STATEWIDE CRIME INDEX
JANUARY - DECEMBER, 2006
The Crime Index was developed by the FBI as an indicator to measure changes in the total amount of crime in a jurisdiction. The Crime Index is a remnant of an older format for crime reporting known has Summary Reporting which Vermont discontinued in 2005 in favor of the newer National Incident Report System (NIBRS). In Vermont the new NIBRS format is known as Vermont Crime On-Line or VCON. Because the Crime Index is still used in Vermont as an indicator of crime trends, a 2006 version is included in this report. The data in this table were obtained from VCON and collapsed into the SUMMARY system crime types.
Though it is valid to compare the differences in the Crime Index between 2005 and 2006 since both years were collected using the VCON system, it is not valid to compare the Crime Index prior to 2005 with those collected using the VCON system in 2005 and 2006 since the data collection methodologies were different. Please refer to the Introduction and Methodology section of this report for more details.
